Ryanair Announces New Routes from Liverpool

It has been recently announced that Ryanair will be adding 2 new destinations to its network of routes from Liverpool John Lennon Airport [LPL] for the summer schedule with services operating to Barcelona [BCN] and Almeria [LEI].

Flights will commence on 25 March and will take the number of destinations served by Ryanair to 40.

It is expected that the flight to Barcelona will prove very popular, especially for passengers wishing to take a city break to Barcelona.

AVRO Adds New Departures

W Hotels Open New Hotel in Paris

W Hotels is to open its first property in Paris on Valentine's Day - 14 February 2012 - which will be located opposted the Opera Garnier.

This new hotel - The W Paris Opera - is a 5-story hotel located in the Opera area of Paris in an elegant 1870s Haussmann era building. It will have 91 guest room, including 20 suites and two Extreme WOW Suites.

Situated between the famous department stores in Paris, Galeries Lafayette and Le Printempts with the exclusive boutiques of the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore nearby. This means that world class restaurants and museums are just a stroll away.

New Flights from Cardiff Announced

It has been announced that the Spanish budget carrier "Vueling" is expanding its network from Cardiff with two more routes this coming summer.

The airline will serve Alicante and Palma three times per week from 22 June in addition to Barcelona flights which start from 27 March.

BMIBABY Announces New Routes

BMIBABY has recently announced it will be launching 2 new sunshine routes this year and also increase frequency to some its most popular destinations.

The airline will offer new flights from East Midlands to Catania in Sicily and from Belfast City Airport to Mahon in Menorca as part of its summer 2012 programme.

Belfast to Mahon will commence on 15 June with twice weekly flights on Monday and Friday until 24 September.

East Midlands to Catania will operate once a week on a Sunday from 27 Mary until 30 September.

The increase in frequency will affect:
Belfast City to Palma in Mallorca, and Faro in Portugal and Alicante in Spain.
East Midlands to Barcelona and Murcia in Spain and to Malta.

New Routes for 2012

AVRO has recently announced new routes for 2012 to include Dubrovnik in Croatia and Milan, Rome, Venice and Verona in Italy. Each will commence with departures in March.

Flights to Milan and Venice will depart from Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester up to 6 times per week.

Flights to Rome with operate from Luton and Birmingham up to 5 times per week and to Verona from Manchester.

Flights to Dubrovnik will operate from Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester up to 3 times per week.

Recently, Monarch have reported that Dubrovnik had seen fantastic demand for 2012.

Additionally, AVRO has announded further expansion to its Spanish flying programme for summer 2012 with year-round flights from both Gatwick and Manchester to Barcelona with flights operating up to 6 times per week from Manchester and 11 times per week from Gatwick.

New Terminal at Leeds Bradford Airport

Leeds Bradford Airport [LBA] has announced the commencement of works on the next major stage of its passenger terminal development, with an £11 million construction project to deliver new facilities and an improved passenger experience.

The development will provide a 65% increase in airside space over 2 floors, creating a new departure lounge, a new range of upgraded food and beverage offers, a major walk through Tax and Duty Free store and additional retail units. The Yorkshire Premier Lounge will be enlarged and developed, while the security search zone will also be expanded, along with all boarding gate areas.

Work is scheduled for completion in summer 2012.

Get to Know ... Rialto Bridge in Venice

Take a holiday in Venice and you are sure to wonder about the history of the Rialto Bridge. It's history goes back to the year 1181 when the ponte de Moneta was the only bridge to span the Grande Canal. Unfortunately this bridge collapsed and was replaced by a wooden bridge in 1255 and was subsequently destroyed by a fire in 1310 and eventually collapsed in 1524.

Following this, the Venetian authorities sought to build a stone bridge and invited people such as Michelangelo to design such a structure. They finally decided on a design by the aptly named Antonio da Ponte, and the new bridge was completed in 1591.

The new bridge was made of Istrian stone and spans 28m and has arcades of shops on either side. Across the bridge are 12 Renaissance arches and a centrally positioned portal. The Rialto Bridge has since been a vital part of Venice and is a hub of activity.

Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque - Pool Maintenance

We have been advised that there will be maintenance work in progress at the 5 Star Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque in Costa Adeje, Tenerife.

From the 14 November 2011 through to the 2 December 2011 there will be maintenance carried out to the children's pool and the swimming pool next to the Bernegal Restaurant. During this period the hotel will be providing an alternative children's zone which will include pool facilities.

The use of the other swimming pools at the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque will not be affected.

Isla de Lobos Swim

Swimmers annually brave Atlantic waters during the popular Isla de Lobos challenge. Participants race over the 3.4km stretch from Punta Marrajo beach on the outlying island of Lobos to Playa Muelle Chico harbour beach in the resort of Corralejo in Fuerteventura.

Charcoal Burning in Vilaflor, Tenerife

Every year, the lovely town of Vilaflor in Tenerife invites 3 of their senior citizens to build a charcoal burner and make charcoal in the traditional manner.

The event was original started as a method of promoting the local potatoes and the event has become more and more popular each year. Among other things were potatoe sculptures, a potato poem and potato prints. A top chef and the local restaurants took part in the event and different menus using the humble potato were put together.

The importance of the potato crop to Vilaflor and the history and importance of the charcoal burners was related and the food tasting was washed down with a glass or two of local wine. Make a nopte in your diary as next year the event will probably be moved to May.

The Master Cup PKRA [Professional Kiteboard Riders Association] and Spanish Championship for kiteboarding is being held from the 9-13 August 2011 in El Medano, Tenerife.

Some 150 sports stars from around the world will compete in two different disciplines - namely freestyle and race - and will include the top 20 in the world.

The event, officially launched at the Arenas del Mar Hotel in El Medano, will provide a free spectacle along the popular coast of El Medano.

La Piedra Fair in Binnisalem, Mallorca

Jet2 is to increase summer and winter capacity out of Glasgow with extra seats to Spain and Portugal and a new direct route to Geneva. The airline was increasing summer capacity to Spain and Portugal after reducing its Egypt programme following the recent political riots.

For this summer, Jet2 flights from Glagow to Faro in Portugal will increase from 3 to 4 times a week from 26 May - 20 October, while flights to Mallorca will go up from 5 to 6 a week from 15 June - 18 September.

For winter, Jet2 are already taking bookings for its Glasgow routes to Alicante in Costa Blanca and Tenerife.

Mallorca Rocks

Dizzee Rascal, Madness and Fatboy Slim are among the big-name acts lined up to perform at Mallorca Rocks and Ibiza Rocks this summer. The party hotels have released their full programme of outdoor gigs. BBC Radio 1 DJ, Zane Lowe, is taking on the role of music director for the brand.

London-based indie rock band - the Vaccines - who released their debut album this week, will perform at both hotels. Others set to appear include the Wombats, dance punk trio Friendly Fires and Tinie Tempah. Scotting rockers Biffy Clyro, who picked up an NME award last month, are also returning to the Rocks hotels this summer.

Plan B will kick-start the programme on 31 May at Mallorce and 1 June in Ibiza.

Edinburgh to Benefit from 6 New Services

Good news for customers wishing to travel from Edinburgh airport. Edinburgh is gaining 6 new routes this year from Thomson and EasyJet.

Year-round charters from Edinburgh to Gran Canaria are to be operated by Thomson, who are also starting flights to Lanzarote for the winter and Rhodes this summer.

For those who already know and love Madrid and Barcelona, we suggest a stay in the Andalucian city of Jerez - famed as the sherry capital of the world. Mallorca International Classic Car Rally

Mallorca's International Classic Car Rally is an event which attracts rally teams and car enthusiasts from all over Europe with vintage vehicles racing along a 600km route with 14 stages, including a scenic coastal section. There are 2 stages on Thursday evening and 6 stages on each of Friday and Saturday.

Oxford to Palma to Start in Summer

Oxford airport will welcome the first flights to Palma - due to start in mid-June.

The summer programme of Saturday flights are set to be comparable to no-frills or charter services from Luton, Gatwick or Stansted.

The aircraft to be used was previously used in charters for Premiership football clubs and would have a 2-1 configuration [A 50-seat Saab 2000 will be used]. Departures from Oxford will be at 09:30 and from Palma at 14:15.

Ryanair and Monarch - New Routes

Ryanair has unveiled four new routes from Manchester to Alicante, Faro, Madrid and Tenerife. The no-frills airline will also increase the frequency of its Manchester to Dublin route from 4 to 6 flights a day.

However, Ryanair has withdrawn a summer service to Alicante from the Cornish airport of Newquay blaming the £5 charge per departing passenger imposed by airport owner Cornwall Council in 2006. The move is the second blow for Newquay after Air Southwest announcied it was dropping flights to Gatwick.

Monarch Airlines has brought forward its launch of scheduled flights to Paphos this summer in the face of strong demand for Cyprus, announcing it would start twice-weekly services from Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham to Paphos from May. Now is has brought forward the start of the Gatwick and Manchester services by 3 weeks to 13 April. The Birmingham flights will be launched as originally planned on 4 May.

Las Palmas 2011 Carnival - Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria's "party of the year" is the Las Palmas Carnival which is due to start on the 15 February and last through to the 12 March 2011.

As well a flamboyant parades and all-night parties, there are local competitions in Parque Santa Catalina to elect the best chorus group, drag queen and carnival queen.

A long-standing tradition on the island of Gran Canaria [although General Franco did his best to spoil the party until his death in 1975], many event are fancy dress parties and beauty pageants in which a carnival queen and drag queen are elected. Each year, the costumes become more extravagant and competition is fierce.

You will find that carnivals on the Canary Islands tend to last longer than those on the mainland and usually stop on Ash Wednesday. Celebrations in Las Palmas continue until the "day of mourning" for the symbol of the carnival - the sardine. A huge sardine is marched through the streets as everyone follows in funeral costume. The Tenerife Tourism Corporation has reported the arrival figures for 2010 which have shown on unprecedented increase over 2009.

Tenerife's Almond Blossom Walk

If you are on your holidays in Tenerife during the months of January and February, you will undoubtedly notice that hundreds of almond trees start to flower around the paths created by the volcanic lava flow during the 1909 Chinvero eruption. The white and blue almond blossoms are a unique phenomena which occurs during the winter.

On February 6th, the first walk will leave from Hotel Rural Senorio del Valle [located next to the Santiago del Teide town hall] at 08:30 and will pass through El Valle de Arriba and head in the direction of Los Baldios and reaching El Calvario where legend has it Cristo del Valle stopped the lava that threatened to engulf their houses. After El Calvario, you will pass through the Reserva Forestal del Chinvero until finally reaching Arguayo.

This walk is a 6km route and last for approximately 4 hours, after which there is a conference which will discuss the need to maintain this kind of tradition.

If you would like to take part on this walk, it is recommended that you wear the appropriate clothing and walking shoes and to take water and food. A camera would also be recommended - especially if you would like to take part in the photographic competition.

Tenerife's Honey Awards

Tenerife held is Honey Fair last weekend with awards being given to the top regional honey producers in Tenerife. Honey was on display mainly from the island of Tenerife, but also from the other Canary Islands.

Top awards went to Jose Antonio Alvarez and Juan Jose Dorta with honey from Guia de Isora, Cecilio Ledesma with produce of Tegueste, Carlos Ledesma and Francisco Gonzalez with honey from La Laguna.

Pay a visit to Casa de la Miel located next to the Casa del Vina in El Sauzal where you can also discover the history and production methods of this rural craft. Both centres are open on Tuesday 10:30 to 18:30 and Wednesday to Saturday 09:00-21:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 18:00 [closed on Monday].

Monarch to Change Pricing Structure

Monarch Airlines has been reported as being poised to return to inclusive pricing by the end of 2010 in an effort to restore customer trust in airline fares.

Managing Director - Tim Jeans - believes that the public is cynical about low fares advertised on the web, in that the final price will be much higher once fees and charges are included. The first move will be to put airport taxes, air passenger duty and fuel surcharges back into the advertised faires on the first page of their website. Customers will still have to pay extra for bags in the hold and other ancillaries such as seat selection as these were optional extras.

Cycling Ride up the Puig Major

If you are on your holidays to Mallorca and are in the Alcudia area on Sunday 26 September you will be able to see one of the most important cycling events in Mallorca - the ride up the Puig Major which is the island's highest mountain [1436m]. Although part of this is used by the miliary and is closed to visitors, the steep slopes are covered with sweet smelling wild rosemary and is home to goats, sheep and rare birds.

The event is organised each year by Trencagarrons and on this occasion the organisation hopes to exceed 400 participants. A chance to enjoy riding up this mountain and to take part in one of the annual cyling-touring routes on the island.

Tenerife Champions Beach Volleyball

Between the 8-10 October the arena at the Siam Park in Costa Adeje, Tenerife will become the stage of the Tenerife Champions Beach Volleyball Cup for the third consecutive year.

The event is a volleyball pairs competition in which 8 teams will face chapions of the leading countries from around the world. The Spanish pair is Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira.

Interested in going to a unique concert in Palma de Mallorca on the 4 September? Andrea Bocelli and Elton John will be performing live together this summer in what is said to be one of the most elaborate concerts in Europe. Preparations are currently in progress to transform the ONO Stadium in Palma.

Andrea Bocelli starts the evening at around 7:30 and will perform for approximately 2 hours with the Balearic Symphony Orchestra. Elton John and his band will then perform for a further 2 hours.

Formentera Salt Marshes - Did You Know?

The flat and salty marshes found along the road leading from La Savina to Es Pujols in Formentera are famous for their birdlife. The most common species include the heron and the fen duck.

During the summer season, the grounds of the marshes are visited by flamingoes.

Until recently [1955] it was commercial viable to produce salt here, but the area was then declared a listed zone and now the area forms a nature reserve.

Releasing the Ducks in Can Picafort

If you are on your holidays in C'an Picafort, Mallorca, on the 15 August then head to the beach in front of the Sol y Mar Hotel at about midday to watch the annual "releasing of the ducks" when around 3000 spectators attend to watch approximately 350 rubber ducks being released from boats for people to grab.

Until recently, live ducks were used. However due to protests being made, the little yellow rubber ducks were introduced in 2007.

Did you know that Santa Cruz de Tenerife was named after the Holy Cross which was planted on the beach when Alonso Fernandez de Lugo landed there with the arrival of the Conquistadors in 1494.

Although it is the capital of Tenerife today and the main port, the capital was La Laguna and the main port was Garachico.

A former mansion which dates back to the 17th century, the Hotel La Quinta Roja is in the old town of Garachico, right in the centre of the attractive church square where you will find is the centre of any activities which go on in the town [a good time for festivals in Garachico is between the 1st and 16th August each year]. Originally named after its owner - the Marquis of La Quinta Roja - the hotel today offers old-world Canarian charm and with an up-to-date level of comfort.

The history of the La Quinta Roja Hotel goes back to 1706 when the mansion was partially destroyed by the fire which ensued as a result of the volcanic eruption which occured that year. Today, this wood forms the majority of the ceilings in the hotel. The Abama Golf & Spa Resort in Guia de Isora, Tenerife, have advised us that the Local Coastal Authority will be carrying out works at the Abama Beach from today until the 31 July from 09:00-19:00. Unfortunately the Abama Golf & Spa Resort are unable to stop these works as all beaches are public under Spanish Law but the Abama have apologised for any inconvenience this may cause to guests.

Menorca's Sant Jaume Festivities

These festivities are dedicated to the Menorcan horse breed which works in teamwork with its rider [caixer], defying the laws of gravity with "Bots" - the horse stands on its back hinds, lifting their front hoofs for a number of seconds.

The Menorcans are devoted to their horses so even during the fiesta these animals are treated with great care and respect. Concerts and performances are held, a funfair and fireworks.

So, if you are Es Castell [about 2km or 1mile southeast of Mahon], the festival is being held from 24-26 July and from the 25-26 July in Es Mercadal [which lies in the very heart of Menorca along the main Mahon-Ciutadella road].

Palma's Changing of the Guard

If you are in Palma de Mallorca on Saturday 31 July, head for the Almudaina Palace. At midday there will be a changing of the Guard of Honour of the old Palma Volunteer Regiment which was raised by the Marquess of Vivot in 1808 to fight in the Spanish War of Independence.

Starting at 12:00 midday there will be a parade and formation of the Guard of Honour followed at 12:30 by a changing of the guard and at 13:00 the parade departs. All this takes place at the front of the Almudaina Palace which is located next to Palma Cathedral.

A bit of history behind the Palace ... Aludaina means citadel in Arabic. This royal residence of King Jaume II was built after 1309, using the walls of an Arab fortress. The Gothic palace includes Moorish-style arhes and carved wooden ceilings and is King Juan Carlos's official Palma residence. The museum here includes the Santa Ana chapel with a Romanesque portal and a Gothic drawing room which is sometimes used for official receptions.

Balearics - La Virgen del Carmen Festivities

This Festival pays tribute to the seafarers and is held mainly on the Sunday - 18 July. The main event consists of a maritime procession and a floral offering at the seashore in memory of seamen. Mass is then held in hour of the patron saint of seafarers - the Virgin of Carmen.

Festivities take place in all the towns and cities that are located close to the coast.

The Blue Flag is a badge which is awarded each year by the Foundation for Environmental Education to the marinas and beaches that meet a range of conditions and facilities and requires compliance with water quality standard, safety, general services and standards of environmental managements.

If you are off on your Tenerife holidays you will find that this year blue flags have been awarded to the beaches of El Medano, Leocadio Machado and La Tejita in Granadilla de Abona, Las Vistas and El Camison in Arona, Troya I-II in Adeje, La Arena in Santiago del Teide, El Socorro Los Realejos, Playa Jardin in Puerto de la Cruz and La Arena in Tacoronte.

Spain have deservedly become "Los Campeones del Mundo" the Champions of the World, after 5 weeks of the World Cup competition and an extra-time goal from Andres Iniesta. Alan Shearer - former England striker - has said "Not only were Spain easily the best team on the night, but they were also without question the best team in the entire World Cup".

Did you know ... 2 of the Spanish team are from the Canary Islands. David Jimenez Silva was born in Arguineguin on the island of Gran Canaria in 1986. Although he has been living off the island since the age of 14, he never misses an opportunity to return to Gran Canaria to see family and friends and helps promote the municipality of Mogan and Gran Canaria as a holiday destination.

The second player is Pedro Rodriguez who currently plays for Barcelona. Pedro was born in Tenerife - Santa Cruz de Tenerife - in 1987 and played for a third division team until he signed for Barcelona in 2005.

10th Porto Cristo Craft Fair in Mallorca

Menorca's Festivities of Saint Peter

If you on your Menorca holidays and are in the Mahon area then you will find the city is already preparing to celebrate the festivities of San Pedro [Saint Peter] to be held this Saturday, 3 July. This is a popular celebration where the city council organises a number of activities for the whole family.

From 11:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 18:00 there will be a lateen sail boat demonstration organised by the Amigos del Mar [Friends of the Sea] which is being held in Mahon's port.

From 19:30 at s'Hort Nou [located in the port area] there will be a game of Joc del Capallet. After this, the swimming competition will be held across the harbour which is being organised by the Mahon Swimming Club. There will also be a demonstration of remote controlled model sailing boats, and then the prize giving ceremony for the swimming competition.

The night will be brought to an end with a concert of popular and sea-faring songs with a street party being held at midnight with a performance from the musical group, Funkdazion.

We will start with the Parador de Canades del Teide in Tenerife. Located inside the crater of a volcano with views of the summit of nearby Mount Teide, this Parador is located 7,200 ft above sea level and is the only building in the Teide National Park. Take advantage of its location and beat the queues to the funicular that ferries passengers to the top of Mount Teide. The Parador also has its own telescope, and holds regular nights for guests to star-gaze.

The Parador de La Gomera can't be matched for its elegance and luxury. Converted from an old manor house with an interior courtyard and fountain, the wood-panelled walls are hung with colonial paintings. The interior is packed with maritime references and has navigational instrumentation from the Columbus era [La Gomera was Columbus' last port of call before heading for the New World]. The bedrooms, swimming pool and garden all have fantastic views towards Mount Teide.

El Hierro has a Parador [the Parador de El Hierro] which is next to the sea and is backed by spectacular cliffs and the Roque de la Bonanza. Many of the rooms have elegant balconies with sea views and the interior has been designed to represent the early history of the island. In the gardens, you will find dragon trees, coconut palms and a swimming pool.

The Parador de La Palma is a more modern hotel, but designed in accordance with the traditional Canary Islands architectural principles It is located on a hillside overlooking the sea and has tropical gardens with native plants, fruit trees and walkways. There are wonderful views of the Atlantic and towards Mount Teide on nearby Tenerife. Request a room in the east wing to benefit from the sunrise.

Lastly, there is the Parador Cruz de Tejeda in Gran Canaria. This is a traditional Canarian building situated in the mountains in central Gran Canaria. The name comes from the huge stone cross which stands at the entrance to the Parador. The Parador is famous for its views over the island and benefits from a terrace perfectly placed to watch the sun go down over the Roque Nublo.

New Flights to Venice from Luton

It has been announced by Luton Airport that Venice has returned to its list of destinations with a new scheduled service from Wizz Air.

Flights are due to start to this popular city from 19 June 2010 with a flight operating three times a week.

Venice is built on wooden piles in the middle of a lagoon on Italy's Adriatic coast. Explored by a gondola, or on foot, the narrow streets and backwaters of Venice reveal all its decorative detail which reflects its past wealth and importance. Venice Lido is 15 minutes by boat across San Marco's basin and then a short bus trip or 15 minutes on foot. The beach stretches for 5 miles and has very fine sand and is backed by an unbroken row of hotels. If shopping is what you are after, there is a good range of top designer boutiques and numerous markets. The main commercial area is in the San Polo district where the shops connect Campo San Polo with the Rialto Bridge. Glassware and lace are local specialities - and not forgetting masks.

The World has stopped for the World Cup

Here were are - the opening games for the World Cup are due to start any minute - and the world has seemingly come to a complete standstill.

The roads are free from traffic, the supermarket shelves are devoid of burgers, buns and beer .... and the topic of conversation is no longer Britain's Got Talent - but who is playing who, on which day and at what time.    Nothing matters in the world anymore apart from football.

Anyway - for those who have no interest whatsoever in spending the next 4 weeks listening to vuvezela horns then we have just the ticket - spend some time away for it all [let's hope that not all bars and restaurants have sky sports in-situ].

Selva Herb Fair in Mallorca

If you are on your Mallorca holidays, take a trip to Selva [approximately 3km north of Inca] on the 12/13 June where you will find the Fira de ses Herbes [Herb Fair].

This is an exhibition of medicinal plants with details on how they are collected and used.   People in Selva have collected and used wild herbs for medicine, cosmetics, cookery, magic and to adorn their festivals for many, many years.

This festival began in 2000 and over the weekend you will find exhibitions, tasting of traditional good and drink, demonstrations and on the Sunday you will be able to purchase products related to the herbs.   The main event of the weekend is the collection of wild myrtle from the mountains which is then brought into the town in order to make Agua de Murta - myrtle water. This was used in medieval times as an astringent and antiseptic.

You will find the houses, streets and squares of Selva decorated with herbs, plants and hand painted banners which relate to a group of 6 characters from traditional Mallorcan folklore and each character is connected to a particular herb. Each character is accompanied by Pau and Rosa [the Selva giants] and children dressed as demons.   The first dance will take place at midnight on Saturday and involves fire, smoke and explosions. The second dance is held on the Sunday morning at about 10:30 to welcome in the myrtle and each character does a separate dance accompanied by live music.
