Carnival Time in Tenerife

We are fast approaching carnival season - a popular time for people to go to Tenerife, and in particular on a Santa Cruz de Tenerife holiday.  2013 sees Carnival taking place from the 6-17 February and this year's theme is Bollywood.

The main carnival take place in the capital - Santa Cruz de Tenerife and is often compared to similar extravaganzas in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.
Taking place every year in the 10-14 days before Ash Wednesday, it is certainly one of the largest Carnivals to be held in Europe often attracting nearly 300,000 people. Head to the Plaza de Espana during the evenings and you will find the Plaza filled with revellers who are quite prepared to dance into the early hours.  The highlight is held on Shrove Tuesday when a large procession of floats takes place, complete with dancers, bands and general entertainment.  The following day - Ash Wednesday - sees the ritual of the Burial of the Sardine.

The Carnival kicks off with the election of its Queen with the contestants tending to be local girls and the newly elected Queen will then reign over all the proceedings and her float takes place of honour in all the parades.

However, wherever you are in Tenerife, you will undoubtedly be aware of festivities being held during this busy time.

So if you would like to be in Tenerife during Carnival season, just give us a call and we will look for a hotel or apartment for you.
