Fuerteventura Beaches - Deserts by the Sea

Fuerteventura - Endless Beaches and Transparent Waters

If you are travelling to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, then you will be greeted by an equal amount of sunshine and sand. Fuerteventura beaches are plentiful around the island, with over 160 beaches to choose from.  A variety of watersports are enjoyed in Fuerteventura, including windsurfing and kiteboarding and with the island named after the "fuerte" [strong] "viento" [wind], Fuerteventura lives up to its name particularly during the summer when the island becomes a haven for surfers.

We will spend a short time taking you to just a few of the more popular beaches in Fuerteventura which may help you in deciding where you would like to go next time you visit this lovely destination.

Cofete

Cofete Beach - Fuerteventura
Playa de Cofete is well known for the hatching of turtle eggs.  The eggs are brought here from the Cape Verde islands and are then hatched in artificial nests on the beach.  However, before the baby turtles can crawl away, they are collected and transferred to tanks at the nursery until they grow to a reasonable size.  They are then micro-chipped and released with the hope that in future years the females will return to Cofete to lay their eggs.

The beach is located on the western side of the most southerly part of Fuerteventura. TripAdvisor has ranked Playa de Cofete the 6th best beach in Spain with 198 out of 276 reviewers rating it as excellent. One of the latest reviews includes "lovely soft silky sand, very isolated with hardly anyone there".   Be careful though as the currents can be strong here.

Corralejo

Once, Corralejo was a small fishing village, but today is a resort full of bars, restaurants and hotels.  Head to the south of the resort and the sand dunes of the protected Parque Natural de las Dunas which form a mini Sahara and occupies an area of 27 sq km [10 sq miles] and it will seem like an endless desert devoid of any life.

Located on the northern tip of Fuerteventura, Corralejo is one of the major draws for tourists and the beach here is often featured in films with the sands extending for some 6 miles.  There are also wonderful views over to the neighbouring islands of Isla de Lobos and Lanzarote.  Conditions here are excellent for windsurfing and surfing as there is a year-round breeze.

101 out of 121 TripAdvisor reviewers have given this an excellent rating, with comments such as "lovely beaches and scenery and the sea is fabulous to swim in".

El Cotillo

El Cotillo Beach - Fuerteventura
El Cotillo is a little village on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura approximately 20km from Corralejo.  The sandy beach has a backdrop of black cliffs and is popular for watersports. Although it is a popular destination you still have the feeling of getting away from it all.  138 out of 184 TripAdvisor reviewers have given this an overall excellent rating, with one of the latest comment including "lovely lagoons for some gentle swimming and sunbathing and lovely views all around".

Windsurfers like the wild waves that are found here at the southern part of the beach.  However, families and sunbathers tend to go to the northern section where the conditions are more suited.

Playa de Sotavento de Jandia

This beach area is simply known as Sotavento. The seas on the eastern side of the island, where Sotavento is located, are calmer although the winds here tend to be constant making Sotavento lagoon a favourite place for windsurfers and kiteboarders with World Tour events taking place here every year [usually in the last two weeks of July].

The beach itself is white sand, and there is a stunning lagoon with shallow, turquoise water. Located just a little north of the beach is the resort of Costa Calma. 84 out of 118 TripAdvisor reviewers have given Playa de Sotavento an excellent review with comments such as "this beach amazed me, it was like stepping on to a Caribbean beach".

Seas on the western side of the island are wilder and there are a handful of surfing beaches located here although diving tends to be the main watersport with a 3,280ft drop-off reasonably close to shore containing some wonderful marine life, underwater caves and clear water.
