Holidays in Alcudia, Mallorca - Not Just a Beach Resort

When you think of Alcudia in Mallorca, you may have a picture of a sandy beach with lots of hotels and apartment complexes to take care of the number of tourists that flock here throughout the summer season.

The town Alcudia is located on the northeastern coast of the Balearic Island of Mallorca and is surrounded by 14th century walls which separates it from Pollensa Bay to the north and Alcudia Bay to the south, and when you enter Alcudia you will pass through the Port de Moll gate.

Of course, you will need to travel just 2km south to get to the most popular tourist resort in Mallorca - Puerto de Alcudia - with its lovely sandy beach, a marina, harbour and a large number of restaurants and bars, and hotels.

For bird lovers, just travel slightly south of Puerto de Alcudia and you can spend many hours at the Parc Natural de S'Albufera.  This is a wetland where marshes have overgrown with reeds and can be explored easily on foot following marked trails.   Over 200 species of birds can be found here and you can obtain a free map from the park's reception which contains a list of some of the birds you a lively to seek.  This makes a great trip for the whole family as it is open from 09:00-19:00 daily.

Tuesdays and Sundays are market days in Alcudia and are held around the Passeig de la Victoria.  Also, there is an annual market held on the first weekend during October where you can find a huge selection of produce whilst being entertained by traditional dancing and music.

Take a look at the Cova de Sant Marti - an underground grotto reached by steps [sometimes these can be slippery].  You will then enter into two chapels - one dedicated to Sant Jordi and the other to Sant Marti.

Ideal for the children [and young at heart] is the Hidropark that can be found approximately 600m inland from the beach and is open from 1 May through to 31 October [10:00-17:00 and until 18:00 in July and August].  Entrance fees : Adults 20 euros / Children [3-11] 15 euros / Senior Citizens [65+] 15 euros / Family Pack [2ad+2ch]  65 euros / Friends Pack [4ad] 75 euros.  Here you will find an excellent selection of slides, tubes, wave pools, minipark, ice cream parlour, cocktail bar, cafĂ©, gift shop and fast food outlets.  For more details you can visit the Hidropark's website.

For a more tranquil experience, head to the port and you will find some trips available on glass-bottom boats to nearby beaches.  However, for the more adventurous, speed boat trips are also available.

If you are in Alcudia during the last week of June, you will be able to see the Festival de Sant Pere [the port's patron saint].  On the 29 June a statue of Saint Peter is parades on the land and the sea and during the week before there are various concerts, activities and shows held in the resort for adults and children.

The tourist office can be found in the heard of the old town [Carrer Major] and is open from 09:30 - 15:00 and on some days is open again from 17:00 - 19:00.  However, it will be closed from 13:00 on Saturdays.

As you can see, the beach is just one of the many things you can see whilst on your Alcudia holidays on the popular island of Mallorca.
